Belleville Conical Washers - Overview | Fasteners 101

Belleville washers (also called Disc Springs, Spring Washers, Conical Washers, Cupped Spring Washers, or Conical Spring Washers) are used to add vibration resistance and preload to a bolt assembly. Plus they can be stacked in various ways to provide additional force and resistance to an assembly, and act as a lock washer as well.

The conical shape adds a spring force to against the bottom of a bolt head which gives it its locking properties. In this video, we further explore these belleville washers in a simple overview of how they work and how you can get the most out of them.

James Cole : Your load and deflection, has 2 together and 2 opposite. The 2 opposite will compress while the 2 together will not. So you will flatten the 2. It won't work very well if 2 are flattened.

I’m making about 4000 pcs, but I need to do a deflection test @ 25%, 50%, 75%, and Flat.
Do you have videos showing how to test Belleville washers, load V deflection?
Can you advise any method to do the test, please? what type of apparatus or press do I need?

This video aims to give a comparison of both the Plus + Positives \u0026 Minus - Negatives of Coil Compression Springs v Belleville Spring Washers within their role in the Regulation of the modern PCP Airgun.


Having designed \u0026 manufactured both mass produced \u0026 one off special purpose regulators as part of my Product Design job on \u0026 off for near 20 years, I can say that both Coil Compression Spring v Belleville Spring Washer have their part to play in the Regulation of your PCP Airgun, Both have Plus + Positives \u0026 Minus - Negatives.

I hope that this video doesn't waffle on to much but helps you to understand more the differences between them both.

I also hope that if you have a lathe or access to a lathe \u0026 are planning to manufacture your own regulator that the information within this video is of some help. This also goes for you if you are suffering regulator issues upon a production rifle \u0026 that this information may help you track down the fault \u0026 correct it more easily.

In Summary:

Coil Compression Springs.

Positives + Very Durable \u0026 Reliable, Often Easily Trackable Pressure Output \u0026 Self Adjustment by the user 'i.e. Adjustment isn't fiddly with micro scopic movements of the adjuster', Due to their Round Section I have never seen any wear / scrapping caused on the inside of regulator body by the Spring, Due to their Power / Pressure to Piston Travel Ratio - The pressure output is not ever really affected by years of use, Easy to Service \u0026 Maintain.

Negatives - You can find yourself very limited in design by both the physical size \u0026 compression strengths of the conventional coil spring due to manufacturing constraints \u0026 so regulators are slightly larger. Also you cannot reach such high regulation pressures with the Coil Compression Springs as you can the Belleville Spring Washers.

Belleville Spring Washers.

Positives + You are not so limited in the size, shape \u0026 design of your regulator as you are with a Coil Compression Spring. The physical size can vary enormously \u0026 they are idea for use in Very Small Regulator. The Belleville Spring Washers can be selected \u0026 stacked in order to give much high Pressure output than can be reached with a conventional Coil Spring.

Negatives -

Often more tricky to adjust \u0026 estimate the pressure output unless you have a test reg set up to use, as great pressure variation may take place over a very small adjustment of the Pressure Adjuster Screw (Nut) etc. Can sometimes be a little temperamental on pressure output over time due to wear \u0026 tare \u0026 also if not kept under some compression force if all air is let out the air reservoir. Can be harder to service \u0026 maintain, depending upon the design.
